Matthew Burke was named Director of Athletics in November of 2010. Burke has been part of the Mount Ida College community since 1998 and has served in many administrative roles within the athletic department.
As Director, Burke is responsible for the overall management of the College’s NCAA Division III department of athletics that includes 16 varsity sports, approximately 300 student-athletes, 40 staff members, intramural and club programs and fitness center.
Since taking over as Director, he has successfully overseen three athletic facility expansion projects, including the Alumni Field turf and lighting project in Summer 2012, the expansion and modification of practice fields in Fall 2012, and the expansion of the College’s fitness center in Fall 2013. In addition, the department has expanded its varsity sports offerings with the addition of Field Hockey beginning in Fall 2014.
Burke started as the Intramural Sports Director in 1998-1999 and later served as a counselor and Assistant Director in the admissions office from 1999-2002. Named Assistant Athletic Director in 2003, Burke’s main duties included overseeing home contest management, game scheduling, team transportation, meals, NCAA compliance and coordinating recruiting for the coaching staff. Burke was promoted to Associate Athletic Director in 2008.
Outside of his duties with the Mount Ida athletic department, Burke serves as the chair of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Ethics Committee, Men’s Volleyball Tournament Chair for the GNAC and as a member of the Northeast Men’s Volleyball Regional Ranking Committee.
Burke has previously taught such courses as Sport Finance, Sport Management Practicum, Introduction to College Leadership and numerous Physical Education classes. In addition he also served as the Sport Communication Coordinator for the North Atlantic Conference in 2003-2004.
Burke was also named Employee of the Year in 2008 during staff appreciation day.
