Mount Ida’s Dental Hygiene program is one of the preeminent dental hygiene degrees in New England, accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). In our program, you’ll receive a strong foundation in biomedical science with practical training in dental hygiene in our state-of-the-art, on-campus dental hygiene clinic.

As a Mount Ida Dental Hygiene major, you’re Immersed in the context of an active dental practice, and you can be eligible for certification as a dental hygienist after your third year.

Preparation for the real world.

A Dental Hygiene degree from Mount Ida includes a solid foundation in basic biology, chemistry, and anatomy, plus a wide range of career-specific courses covering subjects such as dental ethics, periodontology, oral pathology and dental-care materials. Practical skills are emphasized in communication, pain management, preventive oral care, data gathering, dental radiology, pharmacology, and anesthesia. During the fourth year, Dental Hygiene majors concentrate in their area of interest, selecting from education, business/management or biology/science.

The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene is a “1 plus 2 plus 1” program, requiring four years of study, comprised of one year of Pre-Dental Hygiene prerequisites and three years of full-time study to earn the bachelor’s degree.

Students learn through didactic, laboratory and clinical experiences in all aspects of dental hygiene in our state-of-the-art Dental Education Center and Community Dental Clinic. Mount Ida College’s Dental Hygiene program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

First Year: Pre-Dental Hygiene – Prerequisite Courses
Before entering the bachelor’s degree program, all students must complete one year of prerequisite courses. 

Second and Third Year: Students will take two years of prescribed curriculum. After the successful completion of these three years of coursework, students will be eligible to take the national, clinical and state examination boards required for Dental Hygiene licensure.

Fourth Year: During the fourth year, students concentrate in their area of interest, selecting from: education, business/management or biology/science. Most courses in education and business/management may be taken online, allowing students to work as clinical dental hygienists while completing their degree. Concentrations provide preparation for specialized careers in sales/marketing, healthcare, education, research, agencies, as clinicians and as candidates for dental school.

Program Requirements - 121-129 credits, broken out into the following categories:

  • 34 credits - First Year in Pre-dental Hygiene
  • 63 credits - Required Dental Hygiene Courses
  • 12-20 credits - Concentration Courses
  • 12 credits - Other Required Courses
